  • About FIRST:

FIRST is a not-for-profit public charity founded in 1989 and based in Manchester, NH.  The charity is designed to inspire young people’s interest and participation in science and technology, and to motivate them to pursue education and career opportunities in STEM fields.

The FIRST Robotics Competition is a program where high school-aged teams compete head to head on a special playing field with robots they have designed, built, and programmed. It combines the excitement of sports with the rigors of science. Under strict rules, limited resources, and the guidance of volunteer mentors including engineers, teachers, business professionals, parents, alumni and more, teams of 25+ students have just six weeks to build and program robots to perform challenging tasks against a field of competitors. They must also raise funds, design a team “brand,” hone teamwork skills, and perform community outreach. In addition to learning valuable STEM and life skills, participants are eligible to apply for $25+ million in college scholarships. http://www.firstinspires.org/

    About Team 980:

Team 980, the Thunderbots, is an award-winning, non-profit organization of dedicated mentors and sponsors working with students (through Grade 12) in a fast-paced robotics project. Each year, FIRST creates a new game to stimulate students’ critical thinking skills, providing an environment that encourages growth in problem-solving and teamwork. Our team engages students with professional mentors with years of experience in advanced development projects and business management. Our students also perform important non-engineering functions for the team, developing skills in marketing, communications, finance, and sound business practices.  http://team980.com/about-us/

FIRST Championship is a four-day robotics championship held annually.  This year it is held in St. Louis, MO from April 27 through April 30.
